Tonight sees England’s most important game of this year’s World Cup so far, as they take on Colombia in the Round of 16
The Three Lions will be looking to win their first knock-out game in a major tournament for over a decade. The last knock-out victory came in 2006 when David Beckham scored a free-kick to beat Ecuador 1-0.
The first round of the knock-out games has already seen one of the favourites, Spain, kicked out of the tournament, and an exciting quarter-final tie between Belgium and Brazil has been set up.
The winners of tonight’s game will face the winners of today’s tie between Sweden and Switzerland, making many England fans excited of a semi-final appearance for this young England side.
Manager Gareth Southgate, however, refuses to get carried away. He said: “With all our preparations, we feel we are in a good place. Now we have to stop talking and go and deliver.
“It is pointless us even thinking about what might happen after the game.”
What can England expect from Colombia?
James Rodriguez, the top goal scorer of the last world cup, will be England’s biggest threat, if he is fit enough to play. Striker Radamel Falcoa has been in fine form for both Colombia and Monaco meanwhile, Juventus Star Juan Cuadrado will be the first name on the team sheet.
20-year-old defender Davinson Sanchez has just completed his first season for Tottenham after his move from Ajax last summer. The Colombian defender played a large part for Spurs and impressed in his first Premier League season.
“We have a very difficult opponent – a very good side who we respect – and the level of the game is going up a notch,” Southgate said. “But we think we can cause opposing teams a lot of problems and that won’t change because we are in the knockout phase. We will continue to play in the style we have.”
