School’s out for summer Posted On 13 July 2018

Here we give you some ideas and inspiration to help keep the kids entertained this summer – without spending a fortune

Kids go ‘free’ to West End shows in August!

You can get a free child’s ticket (age 16 and under) to one of 40+ London theatre shows, including Aladdin, Wicked and Les Misérables, throughout August when you buy a full-priced adult ticket via the Kids Week website.

There are 172,000 tickets available in total (this includes adult and child tickets) through Kids Week and you can book until the offer ends on Fri 31 August. However, the deal may close early if all available seats get booked early. In 2017, 104,839 tickets sold within the first 24 hours, so you’ll need to be quick if you’re after a particular performance!

There are no booking or postage fees, and you can save £11.50-£80 depending on the show and seats you choose. You can also get 50% off for up to two more children per adult. https://officiallondontheatre.com/ kids-week/

Shows for this August include:

Bat Out of Hell, The Musical – Dominion Theatre, Mon-Fri

Dreamgirls – Savoy Theatre, Mon-Fri

Mamma Mia – Novello Theatre, Mon-Sat

The Play That Goes Wrong – Duchess Theatre, Tue-Fri, Sun Wicked -Apollo Victoria Theatre Mon – Sun

Fantasia – The Vaults Theatre Tues – Sun Thriller Live – Lyric Theatre Tues – Sun

Meerkat Movies 2 for 1 cinema tickets

If you use comparison website Compare The Market, or if you’ve used it in the past year, you can get 2 for1 cinema tickets every Tuesday or Wednesday for 12 months from the date you use the site to get a credit card, loan or insurance, or switch energy, broadband, TV or phone provider. The offer expires 12 months after the date of your purchase or switch, not 12 months from when you activate it. With this deal, you’re entitled to one voucher per week and to get it you can either download the Meerkat Movies app (iPhone and Android only) or log in at the website. You can then simply print the code or show it on your smartphone at the box office. If you fancy an IMAX screening, want to upgrade to premium seats or see a 3D film, you’ll be asked to pay the price difference between this and a standard cinema ticket. This offer is valid at most cinemas across the UK: the big chains such as Cineworld, Odeon and Vue, as well as lots of independents. If you’re not sure, just check with your local cinema before turning up.

Invisible Superheroes, London FREE entry!

Join the Institution of Civil Engineers in celebrating our engineers. Invisible Superheroes come in many shapes and sizes, and in this interactive exhibit, you’ll learn how they save the world every single day. This free exhibition recognises those unsung heroes of the workforce: civil engineers who keep water in the taps, the bridges standing upright or even the trains running. We need these heroes to make our world go round, and this exhibition is about celebrating them in true superhero style! Explore the most amazing engineering projects and get stuck in by building your own bridges or diving into a virtual reality experience. Families can watch films and animations in the new mini-movie theatre and get interactive with games and quizzes; you can even meet the ICE Invisible Superhero characters in person. All in all, this is a hidden gem and well worth a nosy.

• Build your own bridge
• Interactive quizzes and film screenings
• Learn all about the legacy of civil engineers

2 for 1 on 20+ attractions!

Look out for promotional packs of Cadbury chocolates, including Dairy Milk Giant Buttons, Oreo Bites and Crunchie Rocks, to get a voucher for 2 for 1 entry at more than 20 Merlin attractions. The vouchers are valid until 31 July 2019 at a number of attractions including Thorpe Park, Legoland, Alton Towers, Chessington, Sea Life centres and sanctuaries, the Dungeons and Madame Tussauds. However, some dates are excluded at selected attractions, including some in August so check before you travel. All you will need to do is present the voucher at your chosen attraction when buying one full-price on-thegate adult ticket (usually up to £60) and another person will gain free entry. Promotional packs are expected to be in stores until August 2018, but they’re subject to availability. As on-the-gate tickets cost up to £60 at Legoland, this deal could save you £59 if you buy one of the cheapest promotional packs of chocolate and want two tickets. Even compared with buying tickets online in advance, where they’re generally cheaper, you’d save a significant amount with this deal.

£25 for year’s entry to Eden Project

Visit the Eden Project online at least one day before you visit the Cornwall attraction (if you know the date you’ll be visiting) and you can get up to 10% off entry prices.

This means that when booking in advance, you can get an adult ticket for £25 (£27.50 at the gate) and a child ticket for £12.60 (£14 at the gate).

What’s more, if you choose to donate the cost of your ticket to the Eden Trust when booking, you’ll get free entry for a year. This means you’ll pay £25 for a year’s entry. It’s worth noting though that you’ll have to have your photo taken at the attraction as the pass can only be used by one person. www.edenproject.com

Pets at Home free workshops

Running throughout the year, including holidays in UK stores are free workshops run by pet products retailer, Pets at Home. Suitable for kids in all of its 400+ stores during school holidays, sessions last between 30 minutes and one hour. The activities differ from store to store, but all children will be able to learn and interact with animals such as guinea pigs and hamsters to find out how to care for the needs of a pet. Children do not need to bring anything as all materials will be provided. They may also receive a certificate and/or stickers after completing the workshop. Children of all ages are welcome, but sessions are designed for kids aged 5-11 years and they will need to be supervised at all times by a parent or guardian. You need to book online for your chosen store, date and time. http://community.petsathome.com/workshops/
