Make sure your home stands out this year
As we plummet towards Christmas Day, more and more homes in our neighbourhoods will be starting to stand out a bit more than usual thanks to festive lighting.
Most homes will be decorated with beautiful flashing lights at this time of the year, creating a true spectacle for any visitors to the area.
However, the first time you attempt to hang your own lights outside your home can feel quite daunting as you attempt to compete with those around you.
Here are a few tips to produce an expert-looking display and be the envy of your neighbourhood.
Plan and prepare
Do not just rush into your decorating.
Make sure you take a step back and look at the fascia of your home and create a mental image of how you want your lights to look.
Look at the lines of the front of the property and imagine where you could line lights up.
Before you can step foot on a ladder, plug your lights in to ensure they actually work, there is nothing worse than spending hours to get everything in place, just to find out the bulbs have gone.
Many DIY and home stores will sell plenty of kits to hang your lights.
Make sure you have plenty of clipper and gutter hooks at hand.
These will help to secure the strings of lights to windows, along gutters and to doors.
When hanging the lights, plug them in first and then start hanging.
Attach the lights to the power source and then slow work backwards.
This will help you to get an idea of the end result as you go, while also making sure you do not run out of length.
Build up around the property
Do not restrict yourself to just placing lights on the house.
For example, if you have trees and bushes in your front lawn, consider tangling lights in and around these, as this will add extra layers to your display.
